This article reviews the recently released Skype Phone from 3. For those unfamiliar with this device, it enables you to use Skype from a mobile phone. This means you are no longer tied to your computer when using Skype and opens up Skype to a whole new audience of potential users.
The phone supports Skype to Skype voice calling and Skype text messaging, all completely free. The only thing you can’t do is use Skype Out to call landlines and mobile phones. That is understandable, otherwise the phone operator would not make any money on these phones.
You can also use the phone just like any other mobile and call and text other mobile phones and landlines. These incur the normal call and network charges just like a conventional mobile phone.

First Thoughts
The first thing you’ll notice is how slim and lightweight the phone is. Compared to my existing Sony Ericsson phone it is much lighter and thinner.

No real complaints about the phone, but the overall navigation and usability aspects of the phone could do with some improvement. For example, the main menu screen displays a list of plain white icons. A touch of colour would have been nice here to brighten things up.
Skype Features
All the regular Skype features are supported. You can call and chat to other Skype users anywhere in the world, change your status (online, away, not available, etc.) and add and remove contacts. The look and feel of Skype on the phone is very similar to what you get on the computer version, even the sounds are the same. Any existing Skype user will feel very comfortable using the Skype phone.
When you logon to Skype on the phone for the first time it will automatically import all your Skype contacts. You’ll find managing your Skype contacts on this phone pretty easy.
I found the Skype chat feature a bit sluggish. I would get an audible notification of an incoming Skype chat, but the actual message would sometimes not appear on the screen until a few minutes later. I found this confusing as I didn’t know whether a message had been received or not.
That may have been down to the far from perfect phone reception where I live. I can only get a 2G signal where I live and 3G phones have been known to suffer problems in this area before, so it would be unfair to knock the Skype phone too much in this department.
Skype calls on the other hand worked fine. A couple of times the recipient would say my voice didn’t sound as good as when using Skype on my PC, but again I put that down to the phone reception where I live. On the whole I found the Skype calls feature worked fine and it was great to know that all these calls were free! I tried a couple of calls in excess of 30 minutes and had no issues with the line dropping.
Multimedia Features
The Skype phone comes with a 2 megapixel camera, video camera, MP3 player and voice recorder. It may not offer the highest specification camera in the market but it takes pretty decent 1600×1200 pixel quality photos. You can easily transfer photos to your PC using the USB cable.
The phone has several built-in features such as a night mode, auto timer and special effects (black and white, negative and sepia).
The video camera shoots video at a size of 177×144 and like the camera has several useful features, such as a night mode, audio on and off and special effects (black and white, negative and sepia).
Both the camera and video have a feature where you can set the size of the photo or video to be small enough for sending via MMS.

Internet Access
There is an excellent selection of applications available via the web, such as MSN and Yahoo Messenger, Google Maps, Google Mail, YouTube and Facebook to name a few. If you do lots of web browsing on your phone you won’t be disappointed.

Tools
The Skype phone also has a few useful tools up its sleeve. These include an alarm, calculator, calendar, notepad, PC synchronisation via the USB cable, world time and a stopwatch. A pretty impressive line up that should keep most people happy.
Summary
The Skype phone comes with all the normal features you would expect to find on a mobile phone, such as a camera, MP3 player and internet access. Don’t expect this phone to contain all the latest and greatest features that you might find on some other phones, such as a top of the range camera. That’s not what this phone is about.
The Skype phone is all about free phone calls, and opening Skype to a whole new mobile audience, and for that purpose it does a good job. With a sub £50 price tag on PAYG it represents great value for money.

The Swiss_Mouse wants a solar power phone!
That way he can just set it out or on his dash instead of plugging it in all the time.

Hey Dean,
This is a really nicely written review of the 3 Skypephone, I’ve covered your articleon the 3mobilebuzz website this morning, you can see it here - http://www.3mobilebuzz.com/2007/11/15/technicalitch-and-the-3-skypephone/
Also enjoyed the slightly eccentric comments of the Swiss_mouse.
Thanks,
Sam.

@swiss_mouse
why don’t you get a powermonkey eco charger? you can get it from amazon or ecohamster, and it comes with a solar panel charger…

Hey
I love this review - it says things how they are!
I am really interested in getting this phone, but I just have one question to ask: does this phone have Bluetooth?
Thanks, Ollie
5 Dean // Dec 1, 2007 at 8:19 am
Hi Oliver - I forgot to mention that in the review. Yes it does have Bluetooth.
6 maps // Dec 2, 2007 at 2:56 am
Correction, Google maps is not supported on this phone!
7 Bouncer // Dec 2, 2007 at 8:57 am
There are several great things with this phone, Multi function key to switch between applications, Google maps is not supported yet, along with a lot of games, I did notice that the phone is not suppose to support skype conferencing, Although if the host calls you (Incoming call with there name) you can do a conference which makes calling people so much easier, I did notice that if I reject someone trying to send me something over blue tooth I can’t seem to receive anything from them ever again.
8 maps // Dec 2, 2007 at 2:21 pm
in fact, after re-installing google maps a couple of times it worked, but you cant intall it from the 3 site. does anyone know how to customize the launcher menu?
9 Bouncer // Dec 2, 2007 at 7:39 pm
Maps, Do you have a link to download them on the PC and move to phone, without doing it though the phone?
10 maps // Dec 2, 2007 at 11:23 pm
just go to http://www.google.com/gmm on the phone browser and it’ll ask you to download the app

12 Tony // Dec 11, 2007 at 12:52 pm
How many entries can you get into the calender. Ive put about a months worth of appointments, mayve about 20, and its saying the memory is full. Can this be so?
13 Dean // Dec 11, 2007 at 10:10 pm
I’ve stored many appointments in the calendar, some of them occur on a daily, weekly and monthly basis. I haven’t seen any problems with the memory full.
Is it possible something else is taking up the memory, such as videos, photos or songs?
14 Tony // Dec 11, 2007 at 11:50 pm
Hi Dean,
Me and the girlfriend each have brand new SkypePhones and we can only get 20 items in the calender. When we try to add the 21st it says that the calender is full.
I have tried entering a 21st item in the PC program that comes with the phone, but when I try and sync it back to the phone, it too also only sends 20.
I dont think that the memory of full, I have one song loaded and about half a dozen pics.
Is there a way of telling the calender to store its info on the Memory Card we have?
Its a real pain.
Any ideas?
thanks
Tony
15 Dean // Dec 12, 2007 at 4:54 pm
Tony - I get the same problem. When I enter the 21st item it says ‘Calendar full. Save failed’.
Not sure what the problem is because there is plenty of free memory on the phone. It must be a fault with the calendar. I agree it’s a pain. I guess the calendar feature was never tested out properly before these phones were released.
I would report the problem to 3 and see what they say. I would be interested to hear what they say.
16 Tony // Dec 12, 2007 at 6:31 pm
My girlfriend has a little more patience than me, she contacted Three and they confirmed that the “calender” only allows 20 entries - so dont spend your time trying to work out trying to squeeze any more in.
I’m going to have a look on the Internet for downloadable Java one for this phone.
If I find anything I’ll post the info here

Does this skype phone mean if i just chat to the missus via the skype button all it will cost us every month is just £20?
18 Tony // Dec 24, 2007 at 7:07 pm
Just £20 quid yes. Thats the minimum £10 each pay as you go isnt it? For £12 quid (and an 18 month contract) you get 100 free text/mins for anywhere and 300 3to3 minutes - which isnt bad.
Watch the charging though, they make it far far to easy to purchase stuff, our kids played with the phone, and without any problems a six year old had spent 10 quid on games. Its almost a con how easy it is to buy stuff, they dont warn you well enough (Im sure theres some small print), but in real life use, its too easy
19 Dean // Dec 24, 2007 at 7:14 pm
Davey - calls via the skype button are free to other skype users.
In order to make free calls, your missus must also be using skype, either on another skypephone, or using skype on a computer.
If you need any help with setting up the phone then let me know.
The only costs you will incur, assuming you’ve got the phones on contract, will be the monthly rental charges.
Calls to non skype users and text messages are charged at the usual rates.
20 Bouncer // Dec 24, 2007 at 11:58 pm
Discovered something I don’t like much, I get like a 3 second message tone, I liek a very long message, as the girlfreind sends me a message in the morning to wake me up and 3 seconds is rubbish
21 Liam Bennett // Jan 4, 2008 at 8:03 am
I am considering purchasing one of these, could someone please tell me….Could I make free skype calls to my relatives computer in South Africa, it would be much easier to speak to them whenever I want to instead of going on my computer.
It sounds a bit too good to be true?
Liam Bennett
22 Dean // Jan 4, 2008 at 8:56 am
Yes, you can call any of your Skype contacts wherever they are in the world for free!
23 Liam Bennett // Jan 6, 2008 at 9:00 am
Thank you Dean,
I cannot help feeling cynical? 3 do not seem as keen to rob you as other mobile companies……or am I missing something? Would it also work with video?
24 Dean // Jan 6, 2008 at 7:18 pm
You can only make Skype voice calls as far as I am aware, not video.
I’m sure 3 will make money on these phones. You still have to pay for regular calls to landlines and mobiles and for text messages, it is only the Skype to Skype calls/texts that are free.
I guess it is a good way for 3 to increase their customer base too by tapping into the huge Skype community out there.
25 Mr_LeE // Jan 7, 2008 at 4:36 pm
thanks for the review.
Might go buy one now.
Will the skype phone allow 3rd party apps?
i love putting on homebrew appz
26 Dean // Jan 7, 2008 at 7:20 pm
Yes it does support 3rd party apps. For example I’ve downloaded the Google Mail client to the Skypephone. Great little phone
27 jane // Jan 16, 2008 at 9:18 pm
Hi, Just got one of these and it won’t charge whilst it is switched on, do I just have a dud or is it the same for all of them?
28 Dean // Jan 17, 2008 at 8:25 am
It sounds like you have a dud charger. Mine charges fine with the phone switched on.
29 Jake // Jan 20, 2008 at 8:11 pm
Thanks for the review! I have got a question, I could so far not answer by browsing through the www: I frequently travel to other countries; so I use different sim cards - is there a sim-lock on the mobile, respectively is it possible to unlock it? I know skype won’t work when not using a 3-simcard, but that doesn’t matter (I just need a regular phone abroad and I am totaly hooked on to that skype feature!). + even more complicated: will the phone work when using a GSM-net? Cheers!
30 Dean // Jan 21, 2008 at 6:57 pm
Hi Jake,
I can’t give you a definite answer on the unlocking. Browsing the 3G Forum it seems possible, although I’ve read that some applications don’t work once unlocked. Might be worth you posting your question there.
Drop us a note if you manage it!
31 ingrid // Jan 24, 2008 at 10:41 pm

33 Sam // Feb 5, 2008 at 12:04 pm
Hi, is it possible to buy two Skype phones and then give one to someone in a non-3 network country and make free Skype calls?
34 Dean // Feb 5, 2008 at 7:11 pm
You need to have a 3 network in whatever country you intend to use the Skypephone.
The only way to make free Skype calls would be for the person in a non-3 network country to use Skype on a computer, whilst you use the Skypephone here in the UK.
35 Lee // Feb 19, 2008 at 3:40 am
Has anyone managed to get google maps to work correctly? I installed and reintalled a number of times but each time it installs but the search and menu buttons do not work.
36 Dean // Feb 19, 2008 at 12:56 pm
I get the same problem. The search and menu buttons get ignored when you press them.
Look at comment 6 above who says that Google Maps is not supported on this phone.
37 Dot // Mar 2, 2008 at 11:09 pm
When I got my phone, it said it could take up to 24 hours after my account was activated for Skype to work. I’m going on the third day and it still won’t sign into Skype–anyone have a similar problem?
38 Dean // Mar 3, 2008 at 7:26 pm
Hi Dot,
Have you tried signing into Skype on a PC? This can help narrow down where the problem is.
If you can sign into Skype on a PC then the problem lies with the phone. If you can’t sign into Skype on a PC either then it sounds like a problem with your Skype account.
39 andrew // Mar 18, 2008 at 6:52 am
my girlfriend lives in bahrain, if i am in the uk and we have a skype phone each, can we chat for free?
do we have to pay 20 pounds a month for something?
do we just need 2G coverage?
is 2g just normal mobile reception?
do we need ‘3′ coverage in Bahrain or any network will do?
thanks Andrew
40 Dean // Mar 18, 2008 at 8:22 am
Hi Andrew,
I think you need ‘3′ coverage in both countries in order to chat for free on the skypephone. One alternative is for your girlfriend to use Skype on a PC whilst you use the skypephone in the UK, you can then chat for free.
Regarding your other questions. You need to top-up the phone a minimum of £10 each month to keep the Skype service active on your phone. It will work on both 2G and 3G. 2G is just normal mobile reception.

Hello Andrew,
Thank you for contacting Skype Support.
Unfortunately, SkypeOut calls are not yet available with 3 Skypephone which only supports Skype to Skype calls and instant messaging.
Receiving calls using your SkypeIn number is not supported in most countries, however, it is dependent on the local 3 provider. Please visit the 3 website (http://www.three.com/) in your country for more details.
We apologise for any inconvenience.

Hey, Great Review!
A question.
I’m not sure if you have answered this question already but with Skype, can you call to countries like America and Canada? I know Skype-To-Skype calls work in Hong Kong. But How about America, Canada and countries in Europe like France and Germany?
Thank You!
45 Dean // Apr 7, 2008 at 10:10 pm
Hi Joyce,
You can call another Skype user anywhere in the world.
46 Adam // Apr 8, 2008 at 5:21 pm
Hi There
great review and excellent comments thus far.
I am considering buying one of these phones on contract with three. Is there a cost for web browsing, or using msn messenger? I can’t find the info on the three website. Might just be me being a bit dim!
Cheers
adam
47 Dean // Apr 8, 2008 at 7:15 pm
Hi Adam,
I think this works like any other mobile phone and normal web browsing costs apply. You would need to buy an add-on from 3 which gives you a fixed amount of internet access bandwidth per month.
If you go to the 3 web site look for the Products and Services link at the top. Click that link and select the Add-ons link. There are a choice of two add-ons: Internet 10 and Internet Max.
Also, don’t forget that you need to top up a minimum of £10 per month to keep the Skype service active on the skypephone.
48 Dean // Apr 8, 2008 at 7:19 pm
My last comment about topping up £10 a month only applies to PAYG, not contract.
49 Tomas // Apr 24, 2008 at 1:42 am
Hi everyone, in the review and the comments above i miss one thing: what do you thing about loudspeaker quality when playing music? I find that if i turn volume up above two bars the sound quality becomes very disorted. My question would be: is this on all phones or is it just mine?
Thanks!
50 Dean // Apr 24, 2008 at 8:13 am
I find the loudspeaker fine on 3 bars, 4 bars is acceptable but not perfect. It only starts to become a bit distorted on five bars.
51 Chris // Apr 25, 2008 at 10:51 am
Hey all, does PCSync and this phone work with Windows 64-bit? I’ve looked everywhere and cannot find an answer to the question.
The phone simply doesn’t connect, and when I use the add new hardware wizard, and select the Drivers folder, it says it cannot perform task etc etc but not sure if I even have to do any of this or if it simply isn’t supported (or I’m doing it incorrectly?) Thanks.
52 Dean // Apr 25, 2008 at 5:24 pm
Don’t know the answer to your question Chris, but typically 64 bit support for applications is less common than 32 bit.
53 Terry // May 9, 2008 at 3:17 pm
Having all sorts of problems with this phone. Constantly removes all information from the phone and tells me that there is no memory when the phone is entirely empty. As a result I cannot send or recieve text messages… the £39.99 price is a classic case of “you get what you pay for.” ie a piece of rubbish!
54 charlotte // May 10, 2008 at 9:22 pm
Hi, im not sure if this question has been asked before, but I am considering getting the skype phone, but my only concern is about calls abroad. If I take my skypefone to France for example, can I then make calls to other people that are in England ? As in I know you can call from uk to anywhere, but is that the same if you are abroad?
55 Dean // May 20, 2008 at 9:13 am
Charlotte,
You would need to be in a country where there is 3 coverage. I don’t think you would be able to use your skypephone in France to make calls back to the UK.
56 jason // May 23, 2008 at 5:53 pm
Hi, im not sure if this question has been asked before, but I am thinking of getting the skype phone on 3 pay as you go.
the question is when you buy a £10 top if you do not use all of the credit in the month do you lose it
thanks
57 Dean // May 23, 2008 at 6:50 pm
I don’t think you lose the credit. It works like a regular PAYG phone and the credit rolls over. I haven’t topped my phone up for a couple of months and can still make normal phone calls OK.
58 David // May 25, 2008 at 8:38 am
Can I use my monthly 3 contract sim in this PAYG phone? I have the Nokia Blackberry type phone, and I would like to use this smaller phone for everyday use. Basically swapping sims, I still have 10 months to run on contract and this would be an easy way fro me to upgrade to a smaller phone.
Thanks
59 Dean // May 25, 2008 at 6:36 pm
David,
Swapping sims sounds feasible to me although I can’t be 100% certain. I tried putting my O2 sim card in my skyephone as an experiment and it didn’t work, but that is probably because my skyephone is locked to the 3 network.
60 Steve // May 25, 2008 at 8:34 pm
Hi - just got a new 3 Skypephone on a contract and most things seem well. However the battery runs out after 2 days even when on stand-by….its an issue I have not seen on this site. Think it should last over one week. Do I have a dud battery?
One thing I think might be happening is at home I live in an area of poor reception for all networks - is my phone constantly trying to connect and running down the battery. (But other mobiles in our house have batteries that last for the expected time before needing re-charging.)
If so can I change a setting?
Also I have a lot of contacts - but T9 does not seem to work to quickly locate them. Any ideas.
61 Dean // May 25, 2008 at 10:17 pm
Steve,
I’ll fully charge up my skypephone and see how long the battery lasts on standby. I’ll post back the results once the battery drains.
The battery could be draining due to poor reception. You mention other mobiles in your house are OK. Do any of them use the 3 network?
62 Liam // May 27, 2008 at 9:59 am
Hey,
I was just wondering if the 3 Skypephone has Bluetooth
63 Dean // May 27, 2008 at 12:43 pm
Yes the skypephone has bluetooth.
64 Dean // Jun 1, 2008 at 1:25 pm
Steve,
Here is an update on the battery life of my skypehone. It is almost a week since I charged it up and there is still some power left in the battery, so I would say mine lasts about a week before I have to recharge it.
65 Steve Lowe // Jun 1, 2008 at 10:43 pm
Thanks Dean - I switched off the Skype facility at the weekend and I’m still only getting 2 days battery life. Other family members are on the 3 network with Sony Ericsson phones and getting a week . So even though our reception is poor at home, it looks like a faulty battery unless any other possible reasons.
66 gareth g // Jun 8, 2008 at 7:58 pm
I bought one 2 weeks ago, and for me too, I only get 2-2.5 days of standby. I only use the phone for probably 15mins each day.
I called customer services and was told straight away that the advertised 320 hours in only for optimal conditions, ie. bulls**t, otherwise known as false advertising.
The operator told my I should expect 2 to 2.5 days of usage, which is ridiculously poor, and makes me angry.
I am glad to see that Dean is getting a full week, as this gives me hope that something can be done.
Can other people report their approximate standby times too, please.
Either 3 are being grossly dishonest about battery life, or some of us have been given sub-standard batteries.
67 Steve Lowe // Jun 8, 2008 at 11:20 pm
Hi Gareth - I got a couple of phones on contract from 3 - skypephone and sony ericcson. they both have very much reduced battery lifes. Meanwhile my colleague at work has a skypephone and his battery life is reasonable.
I believe it is because my reception at home is poor. Therefore the phone is working constantly at trying to connect - and so the battery gets used up more quickly.
Do you suffer poor reception too?
68 guy rogers // Jun 9, 2008 at 9:29 pm

Hello Steve
Thanks for your comments.
It is hard to say about the quality of my reception, as I have been moving around a lot since I bought it.
But it may well be at least part of the reason.

No there wasn’t .. I sorted it now thanks ! I loaded my motorola suite on pc and copied the contacts to outlook then sent them to the skype phone from the skype phone suite ! thanks though !
73 terpitz // Jun 29, 2008 at 5:58 pm
Lets say if I don’t pay this 10 pound monthly rent. Would I still be able to make the skype to skype calls for free? I just want to buy this phone to make the skype to skype free calls, that’s all.
And what if, I don’t want to pay the 10 pound rent for a couple a months and then pay on the third month. Do I have to pay 10 pound rent for the last two months too or just for the current month in which I am intending to use the phone?
Also tell me, if any of these websites willing to shop the skype phone to Pakistan because that’s where I am from but I would be going to the UK soon but I want to have the phone with me in Pakistan right now.
74 terpitz // Jun 29, 2008 at 6:03 pm
I mean ship not shop lol
75 Dean // Jun 29, 2008 at 6:49 pm
You need to top up the phone £10 per month to make the free Skype calls.
If you didn’t want to pay £10 each month for a couple of months you can do that, but you won’t be able to make any free Skype calls during that time.
When you’re ready to make free Skype calls again just top up the phone a minimum of £10. In your example you wouldn’t need to pay for the last two months, just the current month you intend to use the phone.
You may be able to find a supplier who will ship the phone to you, but there is not a 3 network available in Pakistan as far as I know, so you won’t be able to make free Skype calls until you go to the UK.
76 terpitz // Jun 29, 2008 at 7:47 pm
Ok, thanks. Here’s the thing:
If I top up 10 pounds and ONLY make free skype calls, would I still have the 10 pounds in my balance to make any future REGULAR calls at the start of the NEW month?
And if I didn’t pay the 10 dollars next month, would my previous balance vanish or would it just stay there?
P.S. 1o pounds is just a top up amount, it will remain in the balance, whether I pay the next month’s top up amount or not. It will ALWAYS stay there unless I make some REGULAR calls. Is that right?

And is it possible to join Skype rooms aka Skype casts through this phone to socialize with new people and make our own rooms to talk about certain topics?

The £10 would stay on your balance until you start making regular phone calls. Your balance would not vanish at the start of a new month.
I don’t know the answer to your other question.

If you have the phone, please try joining a cast and see if you could join a skype chat room or not.
And tell me, how much does it usually cost in a month if I buy a regular vodafone sim card for my regular cell phone?

You said:
If you didn’t want to pay £10 each month for a couple of months you can do that, but you won’t be able to make any free Skype calls during that time.
Lets say I have balance in my phone but I didn’t pay the 10 pounds for the new month. Would I still be able to make REGULAR calls with my phones?
So it’s like ONLY the SKYPE TO SKYPE free service would be off, the rest would be all good, right?
And can I pay these 10 pounds from the remaining the balance of my phone every new month?

i have a normal 3 300 minutes talk and text contract and would like to know if anybody has managed to use their existing contract sim in one of these phones,i am not interested in the skype etc but just want to use as a spare handset for my contract sim

Debra,
I think your best bet is to visit a 3 shop and ask if you can try out a skypephone with your sim card before you buy.

Dean,
This thread is still very interesteing - and I never found an alternative calender that we were discussing before.
Anyhow I have a huge problem with the phone, well will google maps and googlemail downloaded apps.
I had both on and they worked great. For about 6 months. Then something crashed on the phone and none of the downloaded apps would run. I uninstalled them, no problem then went to the google site to download gmm and gmail.
Beofre the web site used to warn that the apps weren’t supported on this phone, and if I downloaded them they worked great.
Now the google site says that they wont run on the phone and they dont let you try. the google help screen say they wont run on BREW… although we all know they do.
But I cant get at the old JAR file to download. Ive spent ages and I did find one version - but the buttons were reversed and didnt work properly.
Sop my question is does anyone know where the old (6 months ago) links are for these two apps?
Or — and this is my long shot. The apps are on the girlfriends skypephone, can I get them off hers and install them on mine? ( I’m hoping I can find a lik to the old one)
I have tried installing it through Opera Mini - although this seems to present itself as a proper browser to google so you dont get the mobile links and through the built in browser… but no joy. Any idea the url to get GMail (and GMM but thats not so important)
Thanks
Tony

Which version of the JAR files do you need?
My phone has Google Mail 1.5.0 and Google Maps 2.1.0. I’ve got JAR files for these versions if you want to try them.

Hi,
Thats kind. Any version that works to be honest, I dont know what versions I had but if they work on yours I hope they’d work on mine? I can try.
Do you have the JAR on a server somewhere I can pull them from?
Thanks
Tony

I am planning to buy the Nokia n810 internet tablet and the skype phone as well. I would like to know if I would be able install ALL KINDS of windwows’ softwares on both these phones.
I think Nokia’s n810 internet tablet has LINUX as OS. Would it work just like regular windows and would I be able install all the softwares I want?
P.S. I know my query this time is a bit non related but I would appreciate, if you could answer them both.
