If you’re interested in running Skype on Ubuntu then follow these steps.
From the Ubuntu System menu select:
Administration –> Synaptic Package Manager

Inside Synaptic Package Manager select the Tools –> Repositories menu option. Make sure all the checkboxes are checked. Then close the Synaptic Package Manager.

Next you need to add the Medibuntu repository. Full details about this repository, including installation instructions, can be found on the Medibuntu home page.
To install Medibuntu you need to run a Terminal window session. From the Ubuntu Applications –> Accessories menu select Terminal

Assuming you’re running Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty Fawn you need to enter the following into a command window. If you’re using an earlier version of Ubuntu then refer to the Medibuntu home page for installation instructions.
sudo wget http://www.medibuntu.org/sources.list.d/feisty.list -O /etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list
wget -q http://packages.medibuntu.org/medibuntu-key.gpg -O- | sudo apt-key add - && sudo apt-get update
sudo aptitude install skype
That’s it!
Skype should now be available from the Applications –> Internet menu.

Wow that’s very simple instruction but a faster way of installing skype on Ubuntu. Last month I did it but it takes an hour to install it. Coz Skype is not available on Ubuntu software repository, and therefore cannot be installed with Ubuntu’s package management software such as Synaptic or apt-get without adding the Skype repostory.

Saulius – I finally got round to trying your suggestion of installing the deb package. I ran into lots of issues and couldn’t get it to work. Maybe it is caused by me running Ubuntu 64-bit.
There are lots of good resources on the web to help with installing Skype on Ubuntu 64-bit. But to be honest, I don’t have the patience to mess around for ages on the command line, installing packages, missing libraries, etc.
I was up and running with Skype using Medibuntu in minutes, so that is the way I will stick with for now.

Cualquier duda, avisen.
Saludos desde Argentina!

I have installed all versions of Skype, the one in medibuntu (skype, or static or even skype-oss). I can hear people, but they cannot hear me. My microphone is fine. I tried it on another machine with Windows and Linux. I have adjusted everything from the volume control and I still cannot talk to people. I can only hear them. Any solutions is more then welcome.
Hatim
18 Hatim // Jul 25, 2008 at 3:07 pm
I have also tried versions from Skype web page. I am sure I have a problem with my microphone, I cannot record my voice with sound record. I get the following error:
Your audio capture settings are invalid. Please correct them in the Multimedia settings.
What should I do?

If I install the medibuntu dependency list with the above command, will it not update my system with medibuntu updates?
if so..
How to cut the dependency with medibuntu.
I do not wish to install a lot of stuff on my computer just to get skype.
Im a new user so bear with me it does not make sense.
Your answer is appreciated.
31 Dean // Sep 3, 2008 at 8:35 am
Viren,
If you don’t want Medibuntu on your machine then you will have to look at other ways to install Skype.
You can download the Linux version direct from the Skype web site but I found installing it a lot more complicated and never got it to work.
The Medibunti method provides an easier way to install Skype but I can understand this may not be for everyone.
32 Eddy // Sep 6, 2008 at 10:14 am
Thanks a lot. It took something like 3 minutes to run it.
Just one problem:
Characters and therefore windows are too big, I don’t know how to reduce them.
It’s already signed as “small” in View, but in fact is quite big.

Another anomaly I notice is that when I check all the options for repositories. The source option shows a “-” instead of a check box. Could this be causing some problems later?

Install went fine in a clean 8.10 build but running skype resulted in
/usr/bin/skype.real: error while loading shared libraries: libQtCore.so.4: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
I’m guessing from the fact that its worked for some people that this is a library that is missing from the skype dependencies but that is commonly installed by other packages.

I did everything listed here but nothing worked so I removed skype and reinstalled using Syanptic depository. Now it works!! I also loaded the audio when computer boots up. Sound in must be Camera and video has goen from scrambled to clear. It is frustrating because I can’t reproduce the steps. Therefore I can’t help much . Sorry.

Skype now works fine. Using 8.10 and the Logitech Quick Cam on an old D505 Dell laptop. Works better than it ever did on winxp!! Sound quality is superb better than most phones and video clear and good rate, although I have a slow cable connection ( by choice to save $$).
Thanks for all the help.

I tried downloading from Skypes own site and all I get is scrambled video! I then removed and purged skype from my Ubuntu 8.1 installation. Then I found this site http://t0x.in/medibuntu.html and followed all the very simple steps and WOW it works great. This is now the second time and I have a theory that the Medibuntu install process is different than the skype deb install. Can anyone tell us why?

Make sure you have latest ALSA installed .Goto admin ..synaptic and do install from there. Did you check that you get sound with other functions like videos and CD’s?

Thank you sir!
First, I had found that the mic-in was muted, playing with the ALSA, later, just by playing with it, I got the sound in Skype to work.
Now I’m having a problem with the webcam, a logitech webcam, don’t know the model..
The image in Skype comes up, but it is really dark.
How can I improve image?

The thread is three years old and that first instruction takes you to a 404 because it doesn’t exist any more.
For Ubuntu 8.10+ you can just go here:
http://www.skype.com/download/skype/linux/choose/
Download 32/64 version (if you try to install the wrong one it tells you so get the other) and then just click on it like you would an .exe file in Windows (sorry for swearing) and there will be the option to install it.
If you’re new to Linux, this GUI is probably handier than the command line to begin with.

Idk, I think my repos are permanently borked. If I try to update, I get a bunch of “not found” errors or similar. I have the midbuntu repo, but it doesn’t work properly. My system says there is no valid version of skype available. I am running ubuntu 9.04 though. Where are the old .deb downloads? The skype site doesn’t offer any, just the newest one for 10.4, which i know will not work on my OS version.
