Back in February I installed the Math Comment Spam Protection Wordpress Plugin on this site. The results were very effective. For the last few months it has proved a superb defense again spam.
But in recent weeks it seems the spambots have got smarter. I am now getting a steady stream of spam messages getting past the math protection. It’s a great plugin but I can see how the spambots could bypass this defense. If you get the maths question wrong then you can press the back button on your browser and try again. The problem is that you are presented with exactly the same maths question as before.
It wouldn’t take much skill to develop a spambot that simply guesses the maths question, starting with the lowest possible answer of 2, and if it gets it the question wrong, then press the back button on the browser, add 1 to the previous guess and try again until you get the right result.
What spam protection do you use on your blog? and does it block all spam?
