It’s been almost a month now since I installed the Math Comment Spam Protection Plugin so time for the results.
Absolutely zero spam has got past this plugin! I’ve got the Akismet plugin still enabled in case any spam got past the math protection, but Akismet hasn’t even needed to break into a sweat
If you have a WordPress blog suffering a daily barrage of spam then I can’t recommend this plugin enough. The home page for this plugin has the download link and installation details.

Interesting result. Of course, it only works as long as it is not widely adopted.

How would more people adopting this plugin make it less effective.
Were you thinking the spambots mights try to get round the plugin if more people start using it?

Example dean. Spammers are lazy, but unfortunately will adopt particularly when it is trivial to. Hey, don’t get my wrong, it is great that it is working for you today!

This week I received my first piece of SPAM to get past the math protection, although the backup Akismet protection still caught it. Either the SPAM was entered manually by a human, a spambot got lucky with the maths, or spammers are figuring out ways to overcome the maths protection.

Did you have any difficulty getting it to work? I added it into the comments php and it shows up. However, I can leave it blank and the comment will be added. I can also enter a wrong answer and it will add the comment.

I didn’t have any difficulties getting it to work. I modified comments.php like you did and then activated the plugin.
You could try experimenting with the plugin code in different places within comments.php but I doubt that will make any difference.
Did you try deactiviating and reactivating the plugin to see if that made any difference?
The other possibility is a conflict with another plugin you’re using.
Which version of WordPress are you using?
