I’m currently on a business trip in the US and was flicking through the TV channels in my hotel room when I came across Major League Gaming (MLG) being shown on USA.
For people living in the USA you have probably seen this all before, but for people like myself living in the UK I was intrigued to see the media attention these type of events are getting.
In a nutshell MLG is teams playing video games against each other. The heart of this is the pro circuit where teams meet up at various locations around the US to compete for some serious prize money. A recent event in Las Vegas boasted a prize pot of $234,000!
MLG recently secured $25million in investment which shows how much interest there is in the sport. I use the term sport because that is really what it is. I think it has great potential to become popular with fans. Hey, if there was an event near me I would pay to go and watch!
There’s nothing like watching an opponent getting fragged by a long distance shot from the rocket launcher and then watching an action replay! I used to play online games myself so can appreciate such moves. Team mates shouting instructions to one another and the running commentary from the TV presenter adds to the excitement.
I’m not aware of MLG having such media attention in the UK. Perhaps it is already shown on one of the lesser known satellite or cable TV stations, but I’m not aware of it. I’m sure if it was shown on one of the terrestial TV stations that it would be a success. This is the point where someone will say it already is, if so let me know the details
Let’s hope MLG can hit the big time, both in the US and elsewhere in the world. If there is room for poker to be shown on TV in the UK there sure is room for MLG. Then us folks in the UK can look forward to watching teams like STR8 RIPPIN, Carbon and Final Boss compete in some serious fragging!

Yes I’ve watched xleague a few times. Not bad channel and it’s a start in the right direction.
