root means you are admin on that computer , when you are logged in as root you have full access to taht computer . in Ubuntu you can't log in as root but you have to use ''sudo'' so the system knows you are the admin . try :
sudo mount -t ntfs-3g /dev/sda1 /mnt/windrive -o force

it will ask for you're password and done ... anytime when ubuntu asks you to be root use SUDO

NOT a very savvy girl here, but desperate to get my files 7 could use a little simplicity, please forgive my ignorance in advance. I am also trying to access my files from Ubuntu, when I type in the command into the terminal "mount -t ntfs-3g /dev/sda1 /mnt/windrive -o force" (copied & pasted from a persons thread here as a successful way to access), it tells me only root can do that. Can't figure WHERE to put root for it to give me access. I REALLY NEED THESE FILES : /
Any help on how to access is deeply appreciated.

Yeah, just like my grandpa ( who had been a hard player - this man was a foolhardy driver, a war veteran who further along delved straight into all that Castaneda Toltec sorcery stuff ), probably would have asserted: "I don't have to understand the facts, or else have any idea aof anything at all in regard to the topic, to have an opinion". I could proclaim the actual same thing having taken in your current post... I'm not really half as tough as my grandfather (and still I've been his popular grand daughter) furthermore having labored for 4 unexciting years at Hitachi (geek that I am) Making drivers and driver updates for "the man", left me with a real fascination with creative types who are clearly excited about their particular fields of interest. Thx for the nice read. Definitely will make an attempt to read more about "the facts" well before I can have an opinion.

Hi, I did this about one month ago and it worked, but now, i entered windows 7 login screen (the one where it says microsoft) and turned off the pc, because i wanted to use ubuntu
now, when i enter ubuntu it shows me a message telling me that the mount of windows can't be opened...
it just gives me two options
1.- press S to skip and continue the booting
2.- press M for manual recovering...
what do i do in M?, because skipping does do nothing...

-Folkert

Given the example spit out by your machine, it sounds like your particular system does not address its drives as hda, but instead as sda.

My suggestion would be to issue "ls /dev" to list the contents of your devices directory. A few columns over you should find your hard disks listed (hda, hda1 or sda, sda1).

After you've confirmed how your systems lists its drives, I would check to make sure "hda1" or "sda1" as it may be, is actually the drive you want to mount. You can query hard disk information by issuing the command "/sbin/udevadm info --query=all --name=/dev/hda". Just replace "hda" with the disk listing you want to know about (ie: hda, hda1, or sda, sda1....)
